I feel like girls are always trying to grow their hair out. The most challenging part is not cutting it while you are trying to grow it long. You know the temptation to keep it at your shoulders or to go to the hair dressers and cut a few inches off to "trim the dead ends."
Well, I'm here to share with you how to know when you hair is finally to the point where you need to stop growing it. When you need to let go and chop it back down to size. Here are some tell tale signs that your hair is too damn long:
Well, I'm here to share with you how to know when you hair is finally to the point where you need to stop growing it. When you need to let go and chop it back down to size. Here are some tell tale signs that your hair is too damn long:
1. You can't wear your hair down in a pony tail for fear of developing a "rat's nest" that will take quite a bit to brush out.
2. You avoid getting your hair wet for 3 or 4 days after washing it to avoid spending 20 minutes trying to untangle your hair again in the shower.
This brings me to my next one:
3. It takes 20 minutes to wash your hair in the shower and 3-4 handfuls of conditioner.
I have to divide mine into 5+ sections and use a wide toothed comb to untangle it! Last time I visited my parents house and didn't have my comb I mistakenly thought I could simply untangle it with my fingers. After 10 minutes and way too much conditioner, I screamed for my mother and she had to deliver me a comb in the shower!
4. When you roll over in bed and your hair wraps around your face and you have to struggle for air until you can untangle yourself.
5. You daydream of being able to run your fingers through your hair and having them not get stuck.
I do manage to get all this hair up into a wet set, though. Instagram: SewMuchToSay
Here are some other responses I got on signs your hair is too long:
-When you can use it as a leash for your kids to hold onto you in a crowd.
-When you can't get up because the person sitting next to you is sitting on it.
-When it comes out of the bottom of your shirt.
-When you slam it in the car door.
-When it gets shut in the silverware drawer.
Thankfully, mine isn't so long that other people sit on it, but it is on it's way! I have been wanting to cut mine for months. Even as short as in the photo from 2009, above. I literally argue with myself everyday about if I should cut it or not.
Alec just says "Cut it already. You've been asking me if you should cut it for two months now!"
I almost made an appointment to cut in a few weeks ago.
I would even settle for shoulder length, like when I got to feed this cow in my junior year of high school.
Then, I go to work and have a sweet, little old lady say "Are you the one with the braid?" and continue to tell her family about how I have the "most beautiful, thick, long braid." And other ones offering to braid my hair anytime I want. And endless compliments on how pretty my long (crazy) hair is.
On the other hand, I can braid it in a billion ways, and tie it up in one heck of a top knot. Fall is just around the corner and It won't be so suffocatingly hot on my neck. I am also afraid to cut it for fear of my face looking far too chubby with less hair to hide it.
So, for now I'm keeping it. We'll see how long it lasts, though.
How do you know when your hair is too damn long?

Those are some good ways to tell! I used to have my hair really long (like waist length) and everywhere I went, I got compliments from people. But after awhile, I felt like they saw my hair, not me. I was "the girl with the long hair" to them. So I cut it and now it's a few inches past my shoulders. I like the idea of being able to crazy cool hairstyles but I like that it's more manageable now, too!
ReplyDeleteAmanda you have a BEAUTIFUL head of hair...of course, you already know that! :)
ReplyDeleteI have been working on mine for over a year and a half. I know what you mean about rolling over and it suffocating you. Another way to know is if you go to roll over in bed and your bed partner is on your hair and you have to wake them up so they will get off your hair! UGGHHH!!!
Love the blog!!

Wow, girl!!! I don't think I'd be able to put up with half an hour wash time for my hair. Yours is gorgeous, though. :-)
ReplyDeleteJust cut a little off! You don't have to cut it all the way up to your shoulders just because you want to cut it. I wish my hair would grow faster, so at least you aren't on the other end of the spectrum. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain! It takes me such a long time to comb through my hair in the shower, and it gets caught in everything, but long hair is just so much fun. I think you've just got to decide whether it's more hassle than fun, and if it is, cut it! It's just hair, it will grow back xx
